You know how it feels when you’re really hungry

On October 31st, students from Kellam High School will be collecting nonperishable food in your neighborhood for the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia. The Student Food Drive is a nationwide community service project sponsored by Tyson’s. Trick or Treat So Kids Can Eat (TOTS-EAT) is a nationwide community service project of the International Thespian Society, a student honor society division of the Educational Theatre Association (EdTA), the professional association for theatre education.

During the time kids are collecting candy, our students will be around to pick up food for the less fortunate. Thousands of students across the U.S. are working together to try and collect 250,000 pounds of food this year. All donations help people locally. We hope you’ll be able to contribute to our donation total. In the past three years, Kellam students have collected 6,678 pounds (2005), 10,526 pounds (2006), and 14,821 pounds (2007) of food.

Thank you in advance for helping us to make a difference in our community

If you would like to participate in this canned food drive, please place the cans out on your porch by 6:00 p.m. on October 31st. You can also drop off cans at Kellam (2323 Holland Rd) between October 29th and November 3rd. Any questions, call Mrs. Smith at 648-5400, ext. 59138.

First thing I have to say, is it wasn’t me….

I have received emails, and some questions regarding “Dear Resident” letters that some people in the neighborhood have been receiving, actually that was one reason behind the earlier “Disassociation” post of a month ago. I only write and complain here, and I am certainly not going to expend any more cash then the registration of the web site.

If the color of the trim on your house doesn’t match, not my problem. If Wood Bees and Woodpeckers have made your fascia resemble Swiss Cheese, not my problem. If you haven’t cut your grass in a month, not my problem. I may point them out here, but rat you out, not my style…

Just an FYI here…
Civic Associations have no real enforcement ability, the limits would be reporting a person if they are breaking the law, but can do nothing about mismatched shutters, as wrong as mismatched shutters are. I believe that the first several houses on Hunts Neck Trail and Hunts Neck Ct. were the only the ever have restrictions, and I believe those expired as soon as all the houses were sold. Take this information as is, because I am not a lawyer, and this is not official advice.

Newsflash…

No matter how much you water, the sidewalk will never grow.

Everywhere in the neighborhood, everyone (well almost everyone) is whipping their yard into shape, and many of those people need to be reminded, that no matter how much they water, the sidewalk will never grow.

There are 2 type of sidewalk waterers, the I don’t give a damn, and absent minded. The I don’t give damn’s, are those who could care less about anyone and feel that the sidewalk is theirs to do with as they please (well until there’s a problem, then the City had better be there as quick as possible to do any needed repairs) they are the ones with the built in sprinklers that water the sidewalk by design, not the sprinkler is a little out of whack and hits the sidewalk by accident. these are usually the same people that have too many cars, and think it is ok to park blocking the sidewalk, and usually do so. The good the thing is that these are the least common in the neighborhood, thankfully. There is the sub species of this type of waterer, that have the sprinkler on the hose, and these are normally not as bad, because there is normally a gap that you can pass by on.
The other type is the absent minded waterer, those are the ones (Me included) that turn on the water, and get involved with something else, and forget that the water is running, and the next thing you know the sidewalk in 2 inches of water or mud. The mud can be a real pain, because of the nature of the soil in this area and the high clay content, which can make for slippery situation.

So please pay attention to your watering, and be courteous of others….

I walk through the neighborhood on a fairly regular basis, and recently while I was walking, I noticed the complete lack of U.S. Flags in the neighborhood. So the next time I walked, I decided to count the actual number of flags displayed, and the next time around I counted all the houses I could see, and the third time around I counted the number of non U.S. Flag banners displayed.

Now, I remember a few years ago, because of a tragic event, when you couldn’t turn around without seeing something draped in Red White and Blue, some inappropriately, yet you saw a lot of Red White and Blue. Children at Strawbridge were creating human flags on the playground, radio stations were sponsoring events at Mt Trashmore, etc…

The question also arises, why do we fly the flag. I was taught that we fly the flag, not only to honor our country, but primarily to honor those who have sacrificed everything, to give us the freedoms that we all enjoy today.

Solders raising the flag on Iwo Jima

U.S. Soldiers raising the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi, on Iwo Jima.

WTC Flag Raising

New York Firefighters raising the flag at ground zero.

So the numbers, I pass by 140 houses when I walk, of the 140 houses that I pass, only 9 are flying U.S. Flag, and 8 are flying some kind of decorative banner.
